A dog's nose is a high-performance organ. It allows our four-legged friends to detect scents three meters underground and eight meters beneath a snow cover. Inspired by this benchmark and driven by the goal of creating innovations at the edge of possibility, we are collaborating with the deep-tech startup SmartNanotubes Technologies to develop a digital sense of smell — all the way to market readiness.
This multi-channel gas detector chip detects gases with a resolution in the ppb range and is more sensitive than currently available technologies. It is highly sensitive and analyzes a variety of odors and volatile organic compounds. Using machine learning software tools, these odor patterns are then compared to distinguish between different gases and odors. For this purpose, we are building a database of references. We do this internally by gathering information from our current contacts about their application areas. Additionally, we aim to encourage the developer community to help us identify interesting applications.
The E-Nose could be used in food processing, medical diagnostics, or security technology. In medicine, the digital nose can detect serious illnesses early by analyzing breath. Exhaled air contains around 200 organic compounds, whose composition is as unique as a fingerprint.
With increasing miniaturization, this innovative breath analysis will also find its way into smartphones. Soon, it will be possible to unlock the device by breathing and check your health status. The E-Nose has an equally transformative impact on industry. It is perfectly suited for leak detection. If toxic or explosive gases escape in industrial plants, the E-Nose can detect and identify them in an instant.
